Five ways to revive day-old bread

Real bread doesn’t last forever, but it doesn’t have to go in the bin either. Our favourite ways to use it up.

Five ways to revive day-old bread

Bread without preservatives goes stale faster, and that’s a good sign. Here are five easy ways to give yesterday’s loaf a second life.

1. A splash and a hot oven

Run the crust quickly under the tap, then bake the whole loaf at 200°C for eight minutes. The steam softens the inside and the crust crisps up again.

2. Thick-cut toast

Day-old sourdough makes better toast than fresh. Slice it thick, toast it dark, and finish with salted butter.

3. Croutons, breadcrumbs and more

Tear the rest into chunks for croutons, blitz it into breadcrumbs for the freezer, or layer it into a bread pudding. Nothing wasted.
